This site-specific installation, what are you taking/qué estás dando examines the seemingly uncontrolled gentrification of colonias Roma and Condesa in Mexico City. Over the past month, I have been documenting the blatant urban evolution ranging from layers of street art, the rise of new luxury buildings, to English taking over emblematic Mexican spaces. Alongside these observations, I’ve been conversing with residents about their in/voluntary experience in this transformation.

What emerges is a complex narrative of cultural negotiation and displacement. The influx of tourists and remote workers brings new energy and resources, but also drives up costs, alters public space, and reshapes the social fabric of these communities. This work reflects on the tensions between visibility and erasure, growth and loss.

This work also considers my own position in relation to the city’s transformation: as an observer, as a participant, and as someone trying to remain conscious of those whose lives are being impacted. I seek to augment the layered exchange that occurs when a city opens itself to the world—what is gained, what is lost, and who bears the weight of that transformation.
